About Koda

Koda and his siblings were abandoned when they were just a couple of months old, and we brought him to the UK as a foster pup so he didn’t get left behind in the shelter without his brothers and sisters as they’d all been adopted. He arrived in the UK at the beginning of April and has settled into his foster home so well. Now it’s time to find his forever home!

When Koda first arrived in the UK he was very subdued and timid. It was the first time that he’d been away from other dogs and it was a bit adjustment for him to start with. It took a couple of weeks for him to find his feet, but gradually his confidence started to grow and now he’s really happy and settled. We have no concerns about is ability to settle into a home as a little companion.

Koda is very happy in the company of people. He doesn’t even necessarily have to be interacting with them, he just likes to be present, sitting on his bed or his blanket observing what’s going on. He’s bonded well with his fosters and obviously feels very safe and secure with them, but he’s also friendly with people he doesn’t know too. He’s not ‘run up to strangers’ over-friendly, but he’s intrigued, sweet and very gentle when people he’s unfamiliar with come to fuss him and is very easily won over by a treat or two!

In fact, treats are one of Koda’s favourite things. He is super food motivated and rewarding him with treats has really improved his recall training. His response to positive reinforcement training has been great and we would encourage his new family to continue working on basic commands and recall using the same method as it really works for Koda. He also loves his mealtimes too and will remind you if you’re a minute too late by sitting patiently by his food bowl! He also enjoys food puzzles and a peanut butter filled kong.

Koda is intrigued by the world and very curious when he’s out and about. He is interested in new people, passing children, other dogs and stopping on his walks to stare at things. He’s like a sponge, absorbing everything going on around him, and it’s really helping his confidence. He gets zoomies when out at the park and jumps off the floor like a little bunny when he’s excited!

Koda loves seeing other dogs on his walks and always wants to play with them. Although he gets very excited he does have a good understanding of canine manners and sniffing etiquette, and when approached he tends to be submissive but friendly. He plays with other dogs really nicely when on the long lead and always has fun. He could definitely live alongside another resident dog, but it’s not compulsory as long as he has opportunities to socialise.

Koda’s interactions with children have been limited but he has been very gentle with them, if a little confused at times. He has never shown an ounce of proper fear or aggression, and if living with children it would be preferable for them to be 5+ and understanding of the need for respect, space and boundaries to ensure Koda feels comfortable. He has also only interacted with one cat whilst in foster and at first he was very frightened of him! His confidence has since improved and now he tries to instigate play, which of course the cat is having none of! Again, he’s shown no concerning behaviour and we think Koda could learn to live with a cat, especially one that’s confident and has been around dogs before.

Koda has learnt a lot in the few weeks he’s been in the UK and we’re very impressed with his adaptability. He takes everything in his stride and is a lovely, affectionate and sweet tempered little dog. He has also learned sit, stay, and go to bed. He is already housetrained (provided toilet breaks are regular as he’s still only a baby) and he’s getting much better on the lead. He does pull when excited, but it’s manageable and something that his fosters are currently working to improve, as well as positively reinforcing the putting on of his harness as he doesn’t hugely like that either at the moment, but of course loves going out for the actual walk afterwards.

All in all, Koda is a very balanced young dog and would be a fantastic addition to a family home. Considering his age, his training and socialisation need to be continued, and no doubt seeing his continue to make progress will be very rewarding for his new family. He’s a moderately energetic dog and would welcome a home with a family who enjoy their walks and have access to a little garden too. This little guy is guaranteed to bring so much joy to someone’s home and we can’t wait to see him find his forever family.

Koda is currently based in Reading and has a clean bill of health. He is ready to meet his new forever family so please email eve@theunderdog.org if you’d like to meet him!
