Bing’s story

King Bing! Where to start. On October 27th 2020 it’ll be a whole year since this little squisher came to live with us in London and we can’t imagine life without him now. He is a 3kg dog with 300kW personality (and appetite!).

I must admit that we were nervous about adopting a dog without having ever met it, Eve and the Underdog team tried to send us as many photos and videos as they could get their hands on but there was still a worry in the back of my mind - what if my instincts about him were wrong? But they weren’t wrong and I needn’t have been worried. Bing slotted perfectly into our home life like he’d been here the whole time.

Bing (formerly Benji) was rescued from the streets of Harbin China by one of the Slaughterhouse Survivors volunteers after he was found frantically running up and down the street outside her hostel barking for attention. Very little else is known about his previous life but having spent a stint of time in China myself and previously visited some of the animal shelters there I had a good idea that it was likely not very happy. On his arrival in the UK he was a somewhat underweight and stinky little lad with crusty ears, teeth and eyes but nearly 9 months into him being with us on a regular nutritious diet and a bit of TLC he is thriving. Bing has completely transformed into the little King you see today.

He settled in quite quickly on first arrival in our home but it took a week or so to see his tail wag and even longer for him to have the confidence to play with toys. Our other small dog Bullet (a UK rescue) is a very playful dog and managing her expectations of what Bing will and won’t tolerate when it comes to play is still an ongoing process. Bing is a saint in the house (quiet as a mouse, gentle with everyone, quick to toilet train, no separation anxiety and LOVES a snack) but it has taken him a long time to learn to relax when we’re out and about. Busy parks full of other dogs, people and cyclists can be overstimulating but we continue to work with our regular dog trainer to help Bing realise that not everything is going to attack or try to eat him and we’ve successfully desensitised him to most of the things he finds stressful and overwhelming in these situations.

Bing and Bullet are my case and point that rescue dogs can be tiny and cute too! And whilst it’s not been without some challenges along the way it is every bit worth adopting a rescue dog knowing that we have saved them from a miserable existence elsewhere.

Bing makes us laugh every day and there's no doubt that life brighter with him around.
