Eric’s story

When we saw Eric on the Underdog International website we knew we had to make it our personal mission to adopt him. I had been looking at the beautiful dogs for such a long time and it was so hard to choose just one! Already being basset hound owners we were quite keen to have company for our first dog, Luna, who’d had a difficult year recovering from spinal surgery.

I discussed everything with Eve and filled out an adoption form. The process was very easy, then we were contacted for a home check over FaceTime. Although this sounds daunting, Lyndsay was kind and wanted to check we understood everything it might entail adopting an Underdog (I.e never having lived in a house before, may not be toilet trained etc). She gave us plenty of hints and tips for when Eric arrived and discussed how he might fit into our lives and how him and Luna might adjust to each other. She also informed us that we receive 5 weeks free insurance and the ability to speak with a behaviourist over the phone.

Then we had to wait for Eric to join us from China. We couldn’t wait and had made him a welcome home box full of toys, treats and his very own collar and harness. He had a long journey to the UK and we were kept informed by Eve and had communication about the drop off location. We changed ours to collect him earlier along with another dog - this was flexible and we were grateful of this. Eve and the pet courier service kept us up to date.

We both felt a little nervous waiting at the car park but this soon dissipated when Eric arrived. The pet courier service were lovely and you could tell the dogs had been looked after on the journey. We cuddled our new bundle of love and went straight home.

Eric has slotted into our lives perfectly. There’s been the odd toilet accident and a chewed beloved boot, but for a dog who survived the Chinese meat trade and may have never lived in a house he has adjusted spectacularly. Nothing can prepare you for the joy and emotional rewards of adopting an Underdog. To watch him go from strength to strength has been a total pleasure. I can only thank Underdog International and Slaughterhouse Survivors (including the flight volunteers) for everything they did for Eric and us.
