Peggy’s story

I had followed Slaughterhouse Survivors on Instagram for a while and even decided to go out as a volunteer but with my husband going away to Afghanistan for 6 months I struggled to pin down a date to be able to go out. The dogs broke my heart daily seeing the photos and videos. I wanted to help in anyway I could.

Around June/July time in 2019 they rescued a group of dogs off the back of a truck heading for a slaughterhouse, this was by complete chance as they were actually at a breeders negotiating the rescue of a dog there. I saw the video of the dogs and that was the first time I saw Peggy (Allie).

I had a springer spaniel as a child and I cherish my memories of my first dog love. I hadn't really thought about getting another dog. Trigger, our sprocker cross, was only a few months old at this time and we also have a cat called Murphy who can be hit and miss with dogs but I knew as soon as I saw her I had to have her in our clan. James was away in Belize with work but I was able to message him to let him know we were getting another dog, he agreed mainly because I think he knew that if it came to it, I would always choose the dogs!

I found Peggy on the Underdog website and reserved her straight away. The hardest part was actually not wanting to give them all a home! I knew James would be away for 6 months around the time Peggy would be arriving in the UK so it would just be me and 3 pets! Peggy had puppies shortly after being rescued from the truck so it took slightly longer to get her to the UK. Her arrival was so easy! We just selected the service station closest to us from the list and met the van at the right time.

We have been so lucky with Peggy, she slotted straight in and hasn't looked back since. She loves people, which surprised me given the circumstances she was rescued in. She will happily sit on your lap or as close to you as possibly and have attention all day. She is also brilliant with other dogs, her and Trigger are such an amazing team, they get on fantastically. In the 6 and a bit months we have had Peggy, she has completely changed my life. I struggle with depression and anxiety but she is always there is a need a cuddle, it's amazing how much love this dog has to give and it makes me well up to think about what would have happened to her. It didn't take her long to take to toileting and she's able to do quite a few commands now.

I cannot thank Underdog enough for everything they have done for us, there's always someone when you need some advice, I was worried at first about adopting a dog from another country without meeting them first but it is easily the best thing we have ever done.
