Roe’s story

Roe came over to the U.K. with her sister and two brothers when they were just under 6 months old. It all happened very fast, we signed up to foster her and within a week we were on the road to pick her up. We were nervous about committing to a dog so it felt like fate that we were given the opportunity to take the plunge by fostering. Of course after meeting her I think it took about 2 hours before we requested the adoption form (bet they didn’t see that coming!!)

Everyone we spoke to at Underdog was amazing, very helpful, and encouraging. The home check was straightforward and a great opportunity for us to ask lots of questions.

When we picked Roe up from the courier we took her straight to our car. She was a very scared little thing and we were a bit overwhelmed. She hated the drive to our house. I think if I were to do it again, I would definitely slow this part down and give her some time to adjust to us before putting her in our car. I now know that she loves food, so on reflection we should have had some treats to hand.

It has taken a long time to get her over her fear of driving and she would throw up every time she got in the car. We took her on a camping trip where we were living in our van for a week and that really helped her to get over the fear - now she is as happy as can be and she loves going on trips!

Roe has been very easy to train, toilet training was a breeze and recall is mostly very good. The only time its a problem is when we are in the woods in the countryside. She LOVES chasing deer, so we have to keep her on the lead in some places.  Everyone says Beagles are notorious for bad recall but we think that as she is 25% Beagle, 12.5% American Staffordshire Terrier, 12.5% English Springer Spaniel, 12.5% Staffordshire Bull Terrier and 37.5% Hound breeds (thank-you wisdom panel!) she’s easier to train than a purebred Beagle.

Adopting a rescue has been a huge adjustment and in my opinion requires at least 110% of your attention, but it has been the biggest joy me and my partner have ever experienced. We couldn’t love Roe more and we’re pretty sure the feeling is mutual. We will be forever grateful to Eve, Underdog and their partner shelters, it is wonderful how much happiness each of these rescue dogs are bringing to peoples lives!
