Stella’s story

We had long wanted to adopt a friend for our dear old labrador boy, Talon, but we found all the UK agencies to be against homing adult dogs in homes with young children. Then we lost our beautiful old boy unexpectedly, our hearts were shattered and I did not think I could go through the heartache of losing a beloved dog child again.

But the house was so empty, after thirteen years a house just is not a home without a dog. The kids were so heartbroken and cried all the time, eventually we decided we were not whole and still had so much love to give a dog. Our lovely friend, Rohit, had just adopted Summer and told us all about Underdog and what an amazing organisation they were and that their placements were spot on and they believed in homing dogs with children.

We reached out and Eve immediately mentioned Stella to us. Stella had only recently been rescued and wasn’t even on the website yet but Eve had fantastic placement instinct and believed based on our discussions that Stella would be right for our family. She provided so much information and sent regular pictures so that we were well prepared for Stella’s arrival and already felt connected to her.

The adoption process was so smooth and thorough and before we knew it she was on her way to us! We were a bit nervous, we weren't used to a young dog anymore and she was a little overexcited and restless the first few days. And so skinny! She didn't know what a glass door or upstairs of a house was and barked when we played the piano, but within a few short days she was settled.
We gave her her squeaky bone on the day she arrived and it has been her favourite toy for two years since.

Stella is an intelligent, loving and slightly bonkers dog, we are so blessed to have her as part of our family. She was already house trained and has excellent recall, so we were able to take her for off-lead adventures and she trained so quickly. Everyone loves Stella and comments on what a lovely demeanour she has and cannot believe she is a “rescue”. The house is a home again, the kids smile again and though we all still cry for Talon we now do so while hugging our Stellie poops tight and channelling all that love to her. When I imagine this beautiful creature, cold and hungry on the street, and what might have been her life if not for the wonderful work of Underdog, it breaks my heart. We have realised this is what makes adopting a dog so special and important.

Stella now spends her days snoozing under mom’s desk while she works, exploring the large back garden and annoying squirrels and birds, lazing in the sun or on her bed/the couch/mom’s bed, getting treats, going for long walks where she can run in fields or on the beach, playing with the kids, chasing her squeaky bone, visiting her boyfriend Scoobie across the road, going on road-trips with the family and all manner of doggy things.

Thank you to Underdog for giving us this amazing gift, and for all you do for the dogs of the world!
All we can say is adopt, adopt, adopt!
