Teddie’s story

Back in October 2021, another lockdown looking imminent, I started thinking about getting a dog. Having recently made a move to the countryside, with few friends and feeling lonely, it felt like a good idea to share my home with a rescue dog - long walks, someone to break the peace and quiet a little and bring some light relief! I mentioned this offhandedly to my sister - a matter of moments later she forwarded me an Underdog Instagram Post seeking a home for Teddie…

Teddie hadn’t had the best start in life - born on a building site and riddled with worms, he came to the UK with his brothers to their rescue homes. Teddie’s first home wasn’t quite the right fit - which happens, our first love isn’t always our best! He was taken into foster care and at this point put up for re-adoption. I went to meet him at his foster home and his big personality was almost as instantly apparent as his huge ears - there was no doubt we’d be firm and fast friends.

Teddie’s arrival ushered in the most magical year of my life, he instantly made a house into a home, made me appreciate early morning walks - no matter the weather - made me grin more broadly than I’ve ever know, and made me fitter, healthier and happier.

He also fell in love with my partner Emily alongside me. She came into our life a month or so after Teddie arrived … He was there on our first date, growled at our first kiss and was our third wheel throughout the long, but lovely months we locked ourselves away from the world.

Ted hasn’t been an ounce of trouble; he loves to gallop through the fields, found a love of water in the spring… currently toys are his main motivation and need to be confiscated to ensure he eats his supper! He can be very vocal, squealing to say ‘hi’ or ‘welcome home’ - some take this as nervousness, but we know it to be boyish excitement at the world around him. He prefers to stretch out on the floor than cuddle, but makes an exception early in the morning when still dozy. His yawns are the most brilliant sound I know…

Teddie is the most gentle giant, he loves to play with all other dogs - although his enthusiasm sometimes needs reigning in - he adores children and they him. Often disappearing with my friends kids whilst we are at the pub, he keeps watch, allows scratches and strokes and attracts lots of attention. He was joined by Hendrix - a St Lucian Potcake rescue - in July. Another second time adoptee, they are best buds and brothers from other mothers. They seem to have a mutual understanding and empathy for one another, and it really feels like they are happy to share a home.

Hendrix is very much boss, but Ted allows it, his humble charm and exuberant energy make him the most wonderful chap - I couldn’t have hoped for a better friend and companion on the past years journey. We are looking forward to building our little family together!
