About Poppet

Poppet was adopted almost three years ago after she and her siblings were found abandoned. Since November 2020 she has been living with a lovely family based in Somerset who have shown her nothing but kindness and security, but unfortunately they have come to the decision that Poppet needs a different type of home, and it’s one that they’re not able to offer her. We’re therefore looking for a new forever home for her.

Poppet has been with a loving young family since November 2020 however, she has been unable to adapt well to the family’s increasing desire for adventure. Poppet is comfortable in her own environment with people for company, but in unfamiliar environments or if left alone for longer than a couple of hours she can be anxious and stressed. This can display as whining, barking, or chewing.

Aside from this, Poppet is a wonderful companion. She is sensitive and gentle, obedient, affectionate and great with children, adults and other dogs. She has the potential for further training as she is very motivated by food. She loves affection, sunbathing, and a long walk with lots to sniff and space to run, and would love a home where they are people around most of the day. Her new family should be prepared however to work with a behaviourist to help Poppet overcome her anxieties, as no one can be expected to be home all the time. She would make a wonderful companion in the right home.

One considerable change that we think could really benefit Poppet would be the addition of another dog. It’s very possible that Poppet’s anxiety could be alleviated with the company of another dog to help her feel more confident, but the dog in question would need to be balanced and sociable. Another nervous dog would only exacerbate the situation. Poppet loves other dogs and her favourite thing is to be chased by them. She can be intimidated by dogs that are much bigger than her, very bouncy, or a big group of dogs, but she has never shown an ounce of aggression and a dog of a similar sort of size and energy to her could prove to be a brilliant friend for Poppet.

Poppet loves cuddles more than anything in the world. She adores being made a fuss of and would happily take that all day long - she also likes to lean on you, sit on you, or nudge you with her paw for more pets. She also loves sunbathing, treats (especially chicken), and walks in the quiet countryside. She is happy to loll about all day, but does need a good walk at least once every day and loves running around open spaces. She does not like the rain however!

Poppet is a very intelligent and sensitive dog, she is very aware of emotions, and loves people. She really enjoys one on one time with people and is very relaxed just hanging out or pottering about with someone in the garden all afternoon. She also loves to sleep and rest underneath her blanket, fully covered - head and all! If she is lying in her bed whining, she wants you to put her blanket over her!

Poppet is neutered, house trained and crate trained, she knows basic commands, she is highly trainable and generally obedient, she’s also food motivated and very keen to please. In a slightly different home environment, Poppet will be a dream. Her family have agonised over this decision but ultimately, they feel that both they and Poppet are restricted by the current set up and she needs something that they can’t offer her. They would love nothing more than to find her a forever home where she will be doted on.

If you’d like to meet Poppet please get in touch with eve@theunderdog.org. She is ready to travel and has a clean bill of health.
