About Sonny
Unfortunately Sonny is seeking a new forever home. Initially rescued from the streets of Cyprus when he was abandoned with his siblings, Sonny later flew to the UK and has been adjusting to life as a companion since October 2024. Due to some issues getting along with the resident dog, Sonny’s family have made the difficult decision to find him a new family.
Sonny is a Jack Russell/Hound mix and is the perfect blend of goofy, snoozy, curious and slightly mischievous. He’s also very clever, loyal and playful, and his confidence has improved so much over the past few months. Sonny forms very strong bonds with the people he loves and enjoys spending time outdoors. He’ll often carry shoes around the house just for fun, and his love for belly rubs, treats and naps is unmatched. His favourite things include long countryside outings, chew toys, collecting sticks and dead wood, and curling up on the sofa for a nap. He’s also a Cyprus dog through and through and loves to sunbathe in the garden.
Whilst Sonny has very clearly been showered with nothing but unconditional love since he arrived, he still needs some support through the areas he still finds challenging. Lots of effort has been put into his training and he’s learnt lots of new cues and commands, but he still struggles with separation anxiety and is on a low-dose medication to help support him. This has helped so far, and the behaviourist recommends it is continued. Sonny can become distressed when left alone, so he is looking for a home where someone is around most of the time and committed to ongoing support and structure as he continues his progress.
Sonny really enjoys meeting dogs on walks and is generally a very sociable, playful pup. He has lived alongside another resident dog and got on well with her most of the time, but has recently resource-guarded high value treats, resulting in their relationship becoming tense. We think he would thrive best in a space that’s entirely his own. He could live in either a rural or quieter suburban setting, ideally with access to a secure garden.
We’re looking for an adult-only home for Sonny due to his limited exposure to young children, and he would do best with adopters who have some previous experience with training and understand that while he has some challenges, he is fundamentally a kind hearted and affectionate dog who simply needs the right environment to continue to grow.
Sonny is housetrained, responds really well to food as a reward for ongoing training, and is fantastic on the lead. His recall is improving and he loves walking in nature. He’d be happy to be out all day if you fancied it, but he’s also not demanding in his need for exercise. He’s happy to match your energy levels. Back at home he is very content snuggled up under a blanket or on the sofa, and he likes to slide off leaving his back legs til last when he gets up!
Sonny would make a wonderful companion for someone who enjoys the outdoors, is home often, and is happy to invest time into building a strong bond through ongoing training and trust. His family are very sad to be letting him go, so his next home needs to be his forever home. He is currently in foster in Liverpool and ready to meet his new family.
