Pearl’s story

Pearl arrived at our home just before midnight on 6 June 2020 after a long journey from Cyprus, delivered straight to our door as we were the designated pick up point which was handy! I was very apprehensive because we had only seen a video of her and some pictures and I couldn’t quite gauge how big she was. I needn’t have worried because she is perfect!

We stayed up for an hour with her and then put her to bed in the kitchen. She wasn’t keen on her bed at first so I put a blanket on the floor and she slept on that. After a few nights though she soon realised a comfy bed was better than a hard floor!

For a few months Pearl would steal any drinks she could find – I’d put my cup of tea down for a minute and regularly find it splashed everywhere! And what she wouldn’t do for a take away coffee cup – she didn’t just want to drink the coffee, she wanted to actually eat the cardboard cup. And toilet roll tubes.  In fact, anything made of cardboard.  She quickly learned, however, that she was going to be fed regularly and she didn’t have to eat cardboard to survive!

We began puppy training pretty much as soon as we got her (even though Pearl was an adolescent at 18 months) to help us set boundaries and for Pearl to learn where she fitted into our family. Having a daughter who had only just turned three made that particularly important but again I needn’t have worried.  Pearl has taken to living in a house with a family like a duck to water. Her and our daughter are as thick as thieves and are often found making mischief together!

We have had several family holidays in the UK with Pearl and she especially likes the beach. Whilst she isn’t keen on water at home and won’t go near a stream or puddle, we couldn’t keep her out of the sea!

She is very much a creature of habit now and at 10pm when the news comes on she gets out of her bed and looks at us as if to say “come on, bring my bed in the kitchen, it’s bedtime!”.  All in all, bringing Pearl into our lives has worked out very well and I’m so pleased we made the decision to rehome a dog through Underdog International. Pearl has the most beautiful nature and is so affectionate and loving. Everybody who meets her, loves her.

Because of lockdown and flight restrictions etc, the girls had to work so hard to find a way to get her and the other dogs to the UK and we actually weren’t expecting Pearl to arrive as soon as she did but Underdog managed it! Well done, everyone involved, and thank you!
