Piper’s story

Since we first got together, my partner and I have always envisioned our future with a four legged friend, having both grown up with dogs in our family homes, we always felt empty without one. There was never a question how we would find our new dog, it was always going to be a rescue. My friend showed me a picture of this beautiful black puppy named Otto on the Underdog Instagram and my first thought was ‘that’s the one’. We started the application process to bring Otto home, but Eve thought he wouldn’t adapt well to city life. We were a bit gutted but knew it was obviously best for Otto. Luckily for us Otto had a sister that we didn’t know about called Piper. She was being fostered down the road from where we were living and it was a no brainer to go and meet her.

The moments before that first meet were very nerve wracking, our hearts beating a little faster at every black dog we saw. Eventually, from a distance we saw this little black puppy trotting towards us, with ears larger than her face and the happiest walk you’ll ever see. It was Piper! She ran straight over to us and jumped into our arms, which shocked her foster parents as she can be a little wary of strangers at first. It was love at first sight and we decided that she was coming home with us.

We were so excited to have our princess arrive, little did we know we had actually adopted a goofy turkey t-rex that ignited chaos wherever she went. It’s never been a dull day, including the first day we had her, she decided ingesting a condom found in the park would be a fun ‘ice breaker’ with her new parents. It was not. Piper has since been known as the dog that just eats everything socks, sticks, plastic, horse poop and everything in between (except vegetables). She is such a quirky character, her personality is hilarious and she makes us laugh and smile every day.

Piper struggles with separation anxiety, it’s something we knew would be a possibility with a rescue, especially as it was in the middle of multiple lockdowns. We have been working on it non stop, and she is slowly improving. Our lifestyles don’t require her to be left for very long, so she usually always ends up coming with us wherever we go. She loves going on adventures which we fit in regularly like going to the beach, forests and lots of new places. She’s always more than happy to oblige to sitting in a pub trying to steal a lick of some Guinness! The perfect balance.

It hasn’t always been easy and there have been times where we wondered if we made the right decision. The exhaustion after the first year was very intense, with non stop training, a prolonged season and a phantom pregnancy, we felt very overwhelmed. But it was all worth it in the end, with lots of support, research and cuddles now she’s just the best dog ever.

Adopting an Underdog has been the most rewarding experience, and we urge anyone thinking of getting a dog to consider rescuing. Piper brings us so much joy and we couldn’t imagine our lives without her. Thank you to the Underdog Team for bringing her into our lives.
