About Scout
At the beginning of May, our Head of Adoptions, Eve, was alerted to a family of dogs living on a disused piece of farmland in the middle of nowhere. The dogs had been reported to have been terrified, but one by one she managed to lure the puppies to safety, until finally it was just their mum, Scout, that needed help. Unable to convince her to approach, Eve had to leave with the puppies but came up with a plan for the following day.
This time, armed with hot dog sausages, ham and a towel that smelt of the pups, she was able to gain Scout’s trust little by little before setting up a secure trap and leaving the farm. Within five minutes, Scout had walked straight into the trap and was sat there looking slightly bewildered, but also very relieved. She was taken to the shelter where she was reunited with her puppies, and for the past few weeks they have all been settling in and making great progress. Now, it’s time for them to find their forever homes.
Scout is an absolutely beautiful soul. She is unrecognisable from the avoidant, terrified girl we met on the farm and she’s now trusting, affectionate, loving and so, so sweet. She is fantastic with other dogs, gentle, calm and very patient. Her life has been relatively sheltered, and she’s spent a lot of time in survival mode, so it’s important to expect that she will need time and understanding as she adapts to a companion lifestyle - something that she’s never had to chance to experience in her short life.
Despite raising her little family all alone out on the farm, Scout herself is only really baby. She is estimated to be between 12-18 months, so she’s looking for a home where she can feel secure and safe, and live out the puppyhood that she missed as a teen mother! She has now formed a beautiful friendship with Eve, as though she gradually realised that all that stress on the farm was worth it. All she needs is kindness and patience.
Scout is excellent with other dogs and shares her kennel with a very boisterous male at the moment. He is very bouncy and energetic, and she is extremely tolerant of him. She gets on well with other dogs and could definitely share a home with another pup. As she’s not had a home of her own before, another resident dog would help her adjust to a companion lifestyle, but isn’t compulsory as long as her family can give her the time and understanding to integrate at her own pace.
Scout would be great with children given her gentle disposition, but as she can be a little unsure of fast, unpredictable movements, we would prefer a home for her with children aged 6+. She has not been tested with cats, and as we know she goes into survival mode when put to the test, a secure garden is a must. We don’t think she will have any desire to escape though once she knows she’s home, but better to not tempt fate!
Scout is looking for a moderately active lifestyle with a loving family, based semi-rurally with access to a garden. Her new family need to be willing to put in the work with some entry level training, and to take things slowly but surely to help Scout find her feet. The rewards for giving this girl the time she needs will be so worth it, she is a wonderful dog and any family would be lucky to have her!
