UCR Education Trip Cyprus 2025

Underdog International were delighted to welcome students from University Centre Reaseheath on an educational visit this February. Students studying Canine Behaviour and Veterinary Nursing joined us in Cyprus for five days to visit numerous shelters on the island to understand more about the welfare and stray dog population. The trip highlighted both the challenges and successes of volunteering at dog shelters, and just how many dogs are in dire need of care on such a small island. It is estimated that there are 250,000 stray, unwanted and abandoned dogs in Cyprus.

For many of the students, this was their first exposure to a dog shelter outside of the UK and the experience helped them to see first hand how different the treatment of dogs was in Cyprus. There were moments of sadness and overwhelm, but by the end of the week the group were feeling inspired and encouraged to apply their learning. We were so grateful to meet so many compassionate individuals. Here, you will see an overview of their experience. Keep scrolling for videos and testimonials!

“I had a great time in Cyprus working with Underdog. There was an emotional side to the trip but I was glad I went to try and help with what I could do with the dogs, like socialising them and spending time with them. It was an eye opening trip that I can hopefully do again at some point.

I would encourage people to consider working with Underdog because they provide eye opening, hands on experiences for people to see the stray dog situation, and learn how they can help.” - Adam

“Going to Cyprus in conjunction with Underdog International was an experience I will never forget. I have taken so much from my time with them that will stick with me throughout my future career. We gained a new and individual experience from each shelter.

Without the incredible team at Underdog I would never have had this amazing opportunity. Through their campaigns and education programmes the charity goes from strength to strength in supporting people getting involved in a range of different ways that can suit all kinds of people. To volunteer with Underdog you feel like you become part of a family where everyone supports and encourages each other to be constantly learning and progressive. In an ever changing world where animals can get pushed to the side Underdog refocuses perspectives, giving back to people an underlying driving force to make the world a better place.” - Heather
