About Bonnie
Bonnie was found as a stray and had been hiding in abandoned buildings across open farmland for a while before she was able to be caught. The vet confirmed she had not been microchipped, and as she’d been roaming for a while it was clear she’d not come from a home. She was rescued from agricultural land where strays are often found, and unsurprisingly, no one came to the shelter to claim her as their own.
Bonnie arrived just after Christmas and has been in the shelter without any interest ever since. She was absolutely terrified when she first arrived, and was so avoidant of people. She didn’t want anyone to touch her, and would hide in the back of her kennel when anyone approached. She was then paired up with a confident male dog who has zero fear of anyone or anything, and slowly she started to realise that she was safe.
Bonnie is now a different dog. She’s still a little bit reserved and needs time to trust new people, but she’s much more friendly, so much happier, and she’s really come out of her shell in the past few months. She is more confident in the company of other dogs, and she’s really benefitted from having a kennel friend to learn from and follow their lead. This in mind, we think she would be better suited to a home with another calm, resident dog.
Bonnie would struggle in a loud home in a busy area, so we’re looking for a laid-back home atmosphere based in a calmer residential, or semi-rural location. She would love to be surrounded by fields and nature walks, rather than roads and buildings, and she is definitely looking for a home with direct access to a secure garden. We know that given the time she needs, and a gentle, patient approach, Bonnie will absolutely blossom and she’ll make an amazing companion with a little time and understanding.
Bonnie has had some introductory lead training, and has responded well, but still needs a bit more work. She is a relatively active dog and would welcome long walks, but is also quite happy basking in the sun on a warm day. Given that she’s a shyer dog, we are looking for a home with children aged 8+, so as not to overwhelm her. There’s no a bad bone in her body, but she’d struggle with a very unpredictable household, and would prefer a calm home.
Bonnie absolutely deserves a second chance and we know that given the patience that she needs, she will do so well in a new home. She spent a long time in survival mode, so she just needs a secure environment to understand that she doesn’t have to look out for herself all the time - she’ll be treated with kindness, love and affection. She’s already grown in confidence and made great progress in the shelter, so in a proper home she’s going to do just fine.
