About Gaston
Gaston is a two year old Labrador mix who arrived recently after being found running among traffic. Once again, without a microchip, there was no way to know if anyone was missing him, and he was admitted to the shelter in the hope a family might come and claim him as their own. Unfortunately, that never happened, and now we’re looking for Gaston’s forever home.
At the moment Gaston shares his kennel with a number of other dogs, both males and females. He has slotted in really well and gets on with everyone he meets. He has an energetic, silly style of play and loves a bit of rough and tumble with other dogs, but he can also read the room and knows when it’s time to stop.
Gaston is still a young dog, and he’s therefore looking for a more active lifestyle with a family who can take him on long walks and engage in some basic training with him, to help him let off some steam and to give him some mental focus too. Although he comes across as quite the goofball, there are some brain cells in that big head of his, and he does actually like to learn. He loves being made a fuss of and gets very excited when he’s praised for being a good boy.
Gaston is still working on lead training, and he can be quite strong when he pulls so this is an area that may need some continued work by his new family. He is responsive to positive reinforcement, and unsurprisingly for a Labrador type, he loves food as a reward! He can also get over-excited quickly and will jump up without realising his size can be a bit overwhelming! With this in mind, he would be better suited to a home with slightly older children who are used to being around dogs. We’re confident this behaviour can be improved with training, but there’s only so much we can achieve in a shelter setting.
Gaston is a very friendly, loving, goofy and sociable dog, and he would make a lovely companion in the right home. We’re unsure if Gaston has lived in a conventional home setting before, so he will need some patience as he adapts to a new lifestyle, but as he’s so people oriented we’re sure with lots of reassurance he will settle in quickly.
The ideal home for Gaston would be based outside of the city with direct access to a secure garden. He’d really benefit from some introductory training to improve his manners and build a strong bond with his new family, and he would also love a fairly active lifestyle. He loves rolling around in the grass at the shelter, napping under the shade of the trees, and digging in the dust, so a family who spend a lot of time outside would be perfect for him. He is such a silly love bug with a heart of gold, and we’d love to see him find the forever home he deserves.
