About Skittles

Skittles was yet another stray that was brought into the shelter by the dog warden. We don’t know anything about her history, but we suspect she’s not had the easiest life as she’s taken a while to come round to trust us. She’s now around 18 months old and slowly but surely, she’s found her feet in the shelter,

Skittles is truly such a sweetheart. She finds the shelter quite an overwhelming environment, and it took a little while to find her the right group of dogs to fit into. She now shares her kennel with four other young dogs and she gets along with them really well. Most of them are more confident than her, so they’re helping her to learn that not everyone is unkind.

When you spend 1-1 time with Skittles, she’s a little apprehensive and takes a little bit of time to work out your intentions. Once she knows that she’s in safe hands, she’ll roll over for a tummy rub and accept a chin scratch, but she’s very submissive. She’s so gentle and good natured, but definitely takes a bit of time to feel secure with new people. Among other dogs, she follows their lead and tends to be a bit more confident. For this reason we think she would be best suited to a home where she has a calm, gentle resident dog to learn from. Without another dog she will definitely take longer to settle into a new environment.

The perfect home for Skittles will be a relaxed household based in a semi-rural area with direct access to a secure garden. A family that understands that rescue dogs can take time to trust would be perfect for her, as she will do best with someone who can allow her to go at her own pace. There is an incredibly sweet, affectionate girl waiting to meet her new family, she just needs more than we can offer her in the shelter to properly come out of her shell.

Although there isn’t a bad bone in her body, we do feel that an adult-only household would be the best type of environment for Skittles, as it will just be more predictable for her. Once settled, we think she will be happy to greet visiting children.

We know this sweet girl will respond so well to patience, time and kindness, and we’re sure there’s a loving home out there that can offer her a second chance. As we mentioned, we don’t think Skittles has experienced the feeling of belonging before, and although learning to trust comes a little more slowly to her than it does to some of our other dogs, she still deserves the opportunity to be a part of a forever family.
