About Toby
Toby was brought into the shelter as a quivering wreck. He was initially found and taken to the municipal pound, before a space became available for us to take him into our care.
Toby is only a year old, but he has been quite impacted by his rough start in life and we’re still working on gaining his trust. He is such a sweetheart and he is really trying his hardest to trust, but he’s still quite overwhelmed and not quite sure how to act around people. He has learned a lot from being in the company of Monkey, but he lacks the same kind of confidence and we know that he will only be able to make proper progress in the safety and security of a home environment.
Toby is tiny and underneath his nervous nature, there is a silly, playful boy waiting to come out. We’ve seen glimpses of his cheekiness - play bows, waggy tails and zoomies, but because the shelter is such a loud, busy setting, he has to be on high alert all the time which he finds hard. He gets very excited about treats though, so food will definitely be the way to his heart!
Toby is looking for a calm, patient and relaxed home environment with someone who has experience with dogs and understands that he needs time, understanding and to go at his own pace. He’s young, and there’s so much room for progress, he just needs the right person to help him come out of his shell. He needs slow, hands off approach to start with as his trust is earned. We’re confident that seeing his growth will be such a rewarding experience.
Toby learns by watching other dogs, and would definitely be happiest in a home with another calm resident dog who can show him the ropes. He will bark at bigger dogs if he feels unnerved - a typical tiny dog standing up for himself! Because Toby is reserved and doesn’t thrive on unpredictability, we are looking for a home without children for him.
A family based in a calm, semi-rural location with a chilled home atmosphere, direct access to a little garden, and a slower-paced routine would suit Toby perfectly. He needs time and patience to grow in confidence, but those glimmers of his lovely personality have given us some insight into the cheeky little pup he truly is. He so deserves a second chance.
